Instant Reaction
What pops out initially with the Zephyr’s is that they lose their leading point producer (Wendorff), elite LSM (Roerich), all-state FO/S (Tacheny) and starting goalie (Peer). Four big names in key positions. However, as you look at their roster from last year, they do get a lot of guys back with varsity production. As well as strong 2025 class will give them two more years of production.
The Future
Unfortunately, there are no graduation years on LaxHub for the Zephyr’s so it was hard to tell on if they had any 9th or 8th graders on varsity, from the looking up that I did, it looks like that 2025 group is going to be the group the lean on to make a run in 2024.
2024 Schedule
In the metro east they will have their rivalry game against STA and a conference/section matchup against Hill-Murray. The rest of their conference schedule is not too strong, but, the Zephyr’s have done a good job with OOC scheduling. The 2024 campaign looks to have Edina, Centennial, Maple Grove, Woodbury, Minnetonka and White Bear Lake. That is a fantastic competitive OOC schedule.
In Conclusion
Mahtomedi has been a perennial powerhouse for years. Despite being a smaller school by enrollment, their lacrosse program has been able to produce elite level players year after year and they are always a team that is in the picture when we are talking about “top 10 caliber programs” or “teams we think have a shot at winning section 4.” Mahtomedi has been coined the unofficial “FOGO U” as they have a history of great face off guys over the years and despite losing Tacheny to graduation, they have another elite player waiting in the wings with Churchill. The loss of Peer in goal will be an adjustment but Lavalle should not skip a beat as his replacement. They get a ton of their middies back as well. I was high on the Zephyr’s early last year and they sort of had ups and downs before making their run to state. It really comes down to how they handle Stillwater in sections - they have faced them in the section final four of the last five seasons.
