GIRLS Top 20 Preview: #6 Gentry Academy

Reminder: our list is based off of the laxnumbers ranking list…here. Don’t hate the journalists…hate the algorithm or your shooting percentage.

What They Were

13-2, 78.63 Lax Number Rating against a 71.30 strength of schedule.

#3 seed in Section 4. They lost to #1 Stillwater 6-5 in section finals.

What They Lost

(5) 2024s graduated.

Ella Berg - M: 65g/65a/130 points, 25 GB/19 FT/68 DC

Bella Munz - A: 43g/12a/55 points

Lauren Deering - D: 20 GB/7 FT/11 DC

ALLEGEDLY*…and its a little silly to talk about an 8th grader…but…61 points as a 7th grader that is allegedly no longer in the state warrants a mention in our rag:

2029 Brogan Marsh - A: 16g/45a/61 points

*we say allegedly because we’ve had a few reliable sources confirm this, but its also a little bit of a case where, when we see it we’ll know. She’s also still playing for the club most associated to Gentry, but they’re not strictly a MN team - they’re a national team…so its not outlandish that someone not from MN is playing with them. Regardless - Whatever.

And yeah - there might to be churn in the coaching situation, but all we have are sources (people and otherwise) of information that are old, unreliable, and unsubstantiated. In other words, more to come when we learn more.

What They Have Coming Back

2026 Samantha Hohn - M: 57g/30a/87 points

2027 Zoey Anderson - M: 17g/1a/18 points, 24 GB/9 FT/35 DC

2027 Lauren Lowe - A: 17g/5a/22 points

2026 Ava Davis - GK: 5.69 GAA, 62.8% (note that her Orono game was listed at 0 min, so those 13 goals are not part of her GAA…calm down - not hating…just pointing it out because we actually look at this type of stuff…but gain, whatever…it would have been high 5 or low 6 ish, so still mega elite).

What They Have Looking Forward

You probably know where this is going.

Gentry doesn’t have their lax schedule on their rSchool page…but we have seen their name pop up twice in our researching…in and out of MN.

First - they are also on University School or Milwaukee’s schedule…but not Hudson’s (played them 2X last year and Hudson has a schedule out there) or Kettle Moraine (played them last year).

Second - we checked out all their last years opponents, and other likely candidates…here is what we have so far.

5/9 @ Orono

5/15 @ East Ridge

5/23 @ University School of Milwaukee

So...they ARE scheduling games, they just don’t turn on their spring schedule.

OK - rant time regarding Gentry’s game schedule.

First. We’ve already said this - You have to join a conference. End of story…we cut out a long rant, but we need to give some props here:

Props to St. Croix Prep. They draw from the same geographic location as Gentry. Without anyone in the Skyline conference playing lax, they are associated for lax in the Tri-Metro conference and have 13 games in the books (point is: it can be done). And double shout out to The Hedge Fund with a full schedule despite no longer being tied to a section - which we REALLY hope this is a middle finger at the MSHSL for not having two classes in lax - leave it to The Hedge Fund for leading the charge! And if its because MSHSL doesn’t have their own site up to date…that’s a chef’s kiss moment.

Second. Section opponents. This is a two way street. Gentry - you had better be asking each and every section opponent for games. Section 4 teams - you’re either:

  1. not being asked

  2. not saying yes because you’re afraid of playing Gentry

  3. not saying yes because you don’t like Gentry

Reason 1 - 100% not your fault

Reason 2 - 100% your fault

Reason 3 - that’s your choice and those involved have made their bed and might be forced to sleep in it

Third. Rest of the state. We get it. It’s not your job to bail Gentry out. Love seeing Orono (we’ll probably be going to that game) and East Ridge (we’ll definitely watch that game on NSPN) on the schedule for Diet Shattuck this coming year (and Orono last year). Loved seeing Gentry at the Chaska scrimmages last year. We hope there are a lot more cool Gentry games that just aren’t released yet. Loved seeing them play Hudson last (Hudson is playing an East Side of MN schedule, with some WI teams sprinkled in, but no Gentry yet). We’ve pointed out the instances where there are gaps on other team schedules…but a lot of the well organized (and high quality) schools have had their 13 games scheduled for months already, and already have their plans/opponents/schedules set.

Regardless…Gentry, you’ve got to get your schedule situation inline. Might not be easy. In fact, its probably not easy.

Our Take

Sam Hohn is as legit as you can get. You don’t get recruited by, and commit to, the same school that stole Alexa Spallina from Syracuse, if you’re not the real deal.

Let us say that again for those in the back: Sam Hohn is as legit as you can get.

Feels like Zoey Anderson & Lauren Lowe are primed to pick up the scoring slack.

Defense might be tough for Gentry. Losing Deering and Weiss doesn’t help and if rumors are true, one of the returning defenders is also not playing this year (we’re not quite prepared to push this out, even under the VERY ALLEGEDLY banner, quite yet). Let’s just say a little birdie told us…

Might be only a total of (4) 2025s and 2026s returning (pending transfer portal info). So…depth & experience might be an issue across the board, as well. Tough combo.

They have an ELITE scorer, a more than solid goalie, but lots of holes. Like everyone else: that sounds like an opportunity. While last year could have been the year, we don’t feel they have the overall firepower to complete with Stillwater (and the others we will talk about in Section 4 preview…including our original darling) in sections. Especially, when we are already talking about having 3-4 established returning players may not be enough to compete against the bigs.

So, there you have it. A Gentry preview.
