Instant Reaction

Holy s—t.  That is A LOT of production that is playing at the NCAA level in 2023-24.

Yeah, a lot of programs lose a lot of production each year….that’s part of the bit with seniors being the stronger and most experienced players you have.  But those three really made the clock turn for Chanhassen.

The Future

Chanhassen had 5 2026s on their varsity roster last year (they would have been Freshman).  That bodes well.  Perhaps the best known of the bunch is Zoe Zielinski, who is coming off a major knee injury, scoring 6 goals in 4 games last year.

Stat Crusade

In our crusade on assist percentage…Chan assisted 95/249 goals scored…38.2%.  Not the lowest, but in the talks for lowest.

For the record, our top 8 teams were 59.1%, 50.1%, 34.8%, 67.4%, 58.7%, 55.7%, 33.3%, and 38.2%.

Next stats – the three seniors mentioned above account for 172/192 (89.6%) of the draw controls for the team.  That is A LOT of center circle production that you have to replace…going along with 48.2% (120/249) of the goals.  Yes, Gabby Bjugan is back, had a solid year in 2023 and will again in 2024…but you’re going to be looking for some major stepping up in a few different areas.

2024 Schedule?

Another squad with 13 games in the books…before thanksgiving.  Highlighted opponents Prior Lake, Lakeville South, Maple Grove (2X), Eden Prairie, CDH, and BSM.

One game that looks real interesting on the schedule is Orono…they had a close battle in the section semis last year…and if feels like Orono is on the upswing.  They’re 23 so they’re not going to fall into this recap marathon we are on, but starting to see an honorable mention bit coming after this.  Or we’ll wait for the section review.

Interesting Nugget No One is Talking About

By the time this goes to “press” this might not be a nugget no one is talking about anymore, but the Carly Goetz era is over at Chan after 1 year with the HC position is posted to be filled.

In Conclusion

Man.  We were REALLY high, at times, on Chan in 2023 and that kinda flopped on us a few times.  This feels like an uphill battle for the Storm in 2024.  Excited to see who the next stars are, but there are lot of questions to answer.  Until then we’re going to have some interesting picks for section 2 in our section preview.
