MN LAX x CFB #1

Long time listener, first time blogger.

With fall ball activities ending, it’s time to stir the pot a bit.  On Tuesday, the first College Football Playoff rankings for the 2023 season were released; Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan and Florida State captured the top four spots. Being a high school lacrosse AND college football diehard, I couldn’t help but think that there are several teams that historically share characteristics with some high-profile NCAA football programs whether it be a passionate fanbase, performance on the field or ‘other’ reasons which I’ll get into.

In no particular order I present a short list of MN high school lacrosse teams and their college football doppelganger, and if there is an appetite for this sort of thing, I’ll look to post more each week.

  • Prior Lake = Alabama:  Each year they lose a ton of talented players (for PL graduation, for Bama the NFL Draft) and the next season a wave of young players fill that gap. The coaching is elite, and though they may not win the championship every season they are always in contention.

  • Benilde-St. Margaret’s = Georgia:  Won back-to-back championships after a long title drought.  On paper the most talented team top to bottom, but that doesn’t always guarantee success.  BSM fell short of a three-peat last season, Georgia is looking to avoid that same result.

  • Minnetonka = Texas:  Rabid fanbases, huge budgets and teams with a ton of talent.  Each season we keep asking “are they back?” after hot starts only see them fall back down to earth late in the season.  Speaking for Texas this may be the year they’ve put things together; we’ll have to wait and see with the Skippers.

  • Jefferson = Iowa: Long tenured coach? Check. Fundamentally sound defense? Check. Low scoring offense? Woof…check. Consistent winner… check. But, as of late, has not been able to snag the conference or section.

  • Chanhassen = Notre Dame: Same color scheme! Arguably one of the most successful ‘regular season’ programs in recent memory.  Always relevant but have fallen short of expectations in playoffs

  • Moorhead = Any Service Academy: You can’t hate the Spuds or the troops, it’s the law.  Hard-nosed, scrappy and will fight to the final whistle.

A very good boy,
