Girls State Review: Day 1& Preview Day 2

Day 1 is over…let’s get into it!

Quarterfinal 1: #3 BSM 12 vs UR Elk River/Zimmerman 10

“They bring in 4 players with 40+ points and 2 absolute ball hawks in Lilly Osterman and Katie Wozney (and we aren’t sleeping on Emily Brummer’s 53 points and 52 DCs…and who was called out by one of our North Side Sources in the spring)” - Mrs. Pmac’s Source, June 8, 2024

“We think this is going to be a battle, but we think BSM is going survive a close one…but we will not be shocked if ERZ pulls off the upset.” - Mrs. Pmac’s Source, June 8, 2024

End of 1…4-1 ERZ. Whoa.

5-1 after start of 2…yikes.

Then Julia Evens went thermonuclear. Evens scored 5 straight to put BSM up 6-5 at half…kind of a turnaround.

ERZ, to ALL of their credit, did not fold. Anything but that.

Teams traded goals to make it 9-8 after 3.

BSM outscored ERZ 3-2 in the 4th, capped off by Jun Vang’s goal to go up by 2 in the waning moments.

BSM:

  • Julia Evens 6 goals, 5 DC

  • Maggie Graczyk 1 goal, 2 assists

  • Maddie Kaltsas 2 goals, 1 assist

  • Bailey Gray 6 DC

ERZ:

  • Emily Brummer 5 goals, 1 assist, 6 DC

  • Katie Wozney 2 goals, 4 DC

  • Lilly Osterman2 goals

Quarterfinal 2: #2 Prior Lake 16 vs UR Andover 4

No stats on this one…we watched it, but didn’t record much.

Closer game then everyone thought after 1…PL up only 3-1.

Andover continued to play the Lakers tough, keeping it 8-2 after half.

PL turned on the after burners, outscoring Andover 7-1 in 3Q…and the teams traded goals for the final 16-4.

Prior Lake:

  • Abby Grove absolutely crushed it at the draw circle. She had to be around 70% and approaching double digit DCs.

  • Kayleigh Sandell, Tali Baldzicki, and Sadie Chappuis each had hat tricks

Andover:

  • Addison Thinnes 2 goals

Quarterfinal 3: #4 Stillwater 18 vs #5 Minnetonka 5

“Honestly…this is a toss up. We’re going to pick Tonka only because we have been gushing over them since this thing started and how can we stop now that they’ve made their first state tournament?” - Mrs. Pmac’s Source, June 8, 2024

Well…maybe we aren’t as smart as we thought. Thanks Stillwater.

This was all Stillwater from the get go. They ran all over Tonka and kept it that way for the first 3Q.

Stillwater did a great job of taking Clara Gilbert out of the game by face guarding from the opening draw.

After 1, it was 4-0 Stillwater and they went up from there, making it 10-1 at half.

They Ponies skunked the Skippers again…scoring 5 more in the third to make it 15-1 after 3.

Tonka started making a little momentum to bring into their next game…outscoring Stilly 4-3, to make the final score 18-5

Stillwater:

  • Maddie Richert 4 goal, 4 assists

  • Maycie Neubauer 3 goals, 1 assist

  • Casidy Keykal 3 goals

Minnetonka:

  • Lilly Palm 3 goals

  • Clara Gilbert, Ava Wixo, Jordyn Helling 1 goal each

Quarterfinal 4: #1 Lakeville South 17 vs UR Cretin-Derham Hall 4

Let’s set aside the bit for a second.

Jordin Rosga. Let’s hope she is and will be OK. She went down in the first half and it looked REALLY scary from the stands for a bit. She walked off after a long delay. No speculation here - just hoping its a non issue and she’s alright.

OK - back to the game…it was pretty much all Lakeville South from the start. 5-1 after 1Q, 11-1 at half.

CDH didn’t quit and was only outscored 6-3 in second half.

Everyone from South did what they do: Tschida crushed the draw. Grubbs and O’Brien dipped, ducked, dove and dodged their way to nice days, their attackers chipped in, defense played stout.

Lakeville South:

  • Katie Grubbs 6 goals

  • Sivanna O’Brien 4 goals, 4 assists, 12 DC!

  • Tori Tschida 2 goals, 2 assists

CDH:

  • Jane Stangler 3 goals

  • Jordin Rosga 1 goal

What is Thursday Looking Like

Semifinal #1: #2 Prior Lake vs #3 BSM

Semifinal #2: #1 Lakeville South vs #4 Stillwater

No individual breakdown/prediction. Chalk. All 4 teams showed out…even BSM in their close game…they were pushed REAL hard and showed their true mettle. Very excited about seeing these 4 teams play out on this side of the bracket. Its like a preview of what a 2 class system might provide us…but that is an article for a different day that we are 100% working on.

Consolation #1: Andover vs ERZ

Consolation #2: Minnetonka vs CDH

Its always interesting to see how teams bounce back after the disappointing start. We cannot help but see a Tonka vs ERZ rematch brewing.
