Coaching Prep for 2025: How to Build a Championship-Ready Team

As the calendar flips to 2025, it’s time for coaches to shift their focus to the upcoming lacrosse season. A strong start in the preseason can set the tone for months to come. Here are some tips to help you lead your team to success:

1. Develop a Season Plan

Map out your goals for the season, from individual player development to overall team performance. Break the season into phases:

  • Preseason: Focus on conditioning, stick skills, and foundational concepts.

  • Early Season: Build chemistry and establish roles.

  • Late Season: Sharpen game plans and prepare for playoffs.

2. Evaluate Your Roster

Take time to assess your players’ strengths and areas for improvement. Review film from last year, if available, and think about how you can best utilize your team’s talent.

3. Create Practice Plans

Well-structured practices maximize development and minimize wasted time. Include:

  • Dynamic warm-ups to prevent injuries.

  • Skill-focused drills to reinforce fundamentals.

  • Game scenarios to improve decision-making under pressure.

4. Foster Team Culture

January is the perfect time to build team unity. Organize team bonding activities, set expectations for behavior and effort, and establish a culture of accountability and support.

5. Communicate With Parents and Players

Host a preseason meeting to share your vision for the season. Outline key dates, expectations, and any logistical information. Clear communication builds trust and prevents confusion later.

6. Invest in Your Knowledge

Stay sharp by attending coaching clinics, reading books, or networking with other coaches. Consider hosting a film study with your staff to analyze trends in the game and refine your strategies.

7. Plan for Player Development

Think beyond wins and losses. How will you help each athlete improve? Incorporate individual skill sessions, position-specific training, and leadership development into your program.

8. Organize Your Gear and Facilities

Ensure your team has the equipment and field space needed for a smooth preseason. Check that goals, nets, and practice cones are in good condition.

By starting strong in early 2025, you’ll create a foundation for success that lasts all season. Remember, the best teams are built long before the first whistle blows—and as the coach, you hold the keys to that process.
