#GloveGate

DTA Nation,

As many of you have probably heard by now, we have a #GloveGate at the division 1 level. In a bizarre turn of events in The Ohio State vs Maryland game last evening, there was an equipment check on the FOGO. The fogo has been a hot topic on twitter that we aren’t going to get into in this article as it has less about the fogo and their role in the game, but all about the gloves they were wearing and everything that transpired after the “equipment check”

Typically in men’s lacrosse, the most popular “equipment check” is a stick check on the fogo.  However, last night we saw to my knowledge the first glove check.  According to sources on twitter, the discord, and across the interwebs it states at the college level all players must have matching gloves; “All players on a team shall wear gloves of the same dominant official team collor unless safety reasons require a different color glove to be worn.”

From what I can tell from watching replays online, the fogo was wearing the same type of glove, however, it had a slightly different color scheme.  Teams at the highest level of division 1, such as OSU, are going to probably have 5 different pairs of gloves every season along with multiple helmets and uniforms that they can mix and match throughout the year.  I was asked about my days at UDM, we would get 1 or two pairs a year and would keep the previous seasons gloves.  If I was a betting man, not all the players were wearing the same exact glove every single game.  Now if this is a rule for Division 3, club, even lower level D2: there’s no way everyone has the same pair of gloves with the budgets they are working on.

As I have learned in my career coaching, there’s no unwritten rules anymore.  There’s a bunch of coaches who want to be the joker and cause chaos.  But also, if it’s going to be a rule (if it is it should only be at the division 1 level IMO) then have your details right OSU.

I wonder how many college teams were freaking out and making sure everyone had matching gloves for their game.

My final opinion, get rid of the rule today and move on.  If someone wants to wear bright pink gloves and their coach allows it, so be it.

Just a coach who has respect for the FOGO craft and unwritten rules,

P-Mac
